Animal Care Volunteer

You'll provide essential daily care, health monitoring, and socialization for animals at Cody's house, future Snip & Tip facilities, and large volume clinics in Killeen, and other cities. This rewarding role offers flexible hours, hands-on training, and the chance to be part of a passionate team dedicated to promoting responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.

Work Location: Cody's house, future Snip & Tip facilities, and large volume clinics in Houston, Killeen, and other Texas cities where Snip & Tip operates.


Purpose of the Position: The Animal Care Volunteer supports Snip & Tip by providing care for animals at Cody's house, any future Snip & Tip facility, and assisting with the care of animals transported to large volume clinics for spay/neuter surgeries.


Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Daily Care: Provide daily care for animals, including feeding, watering, cleaning enclosures, and ensuring a clean and safe environment.

  • Health Monitoring: Monitor the health and well-being of animals, reporting any signs of illness or distress to the program coordinator.

  • Socialization: Spend time socializing with animals to help them become more comfortable around people and improve their chances of adoption or successful release.

  • Transportation Assistance: Assist with the transportation of animals to and from large volume clinics for spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and other medical treatments.

  • Pre- and Post-Operative Care: Assist with pre-operative preparations and post-operative care, ensuring animals are comfortable and safe during recovery.

  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of animal care, health status, and any medical treatments administered.

  • Facility Maintenance: Assist with maintaining the cleanliness and organization of Cody's house and any future Snip & Tip facility, including cleaning common areas and ensuring supplies are stocked.

  • Supply Management: Help manage and organize animal care supplies, including food, litter, medications, and cleaning materials.

  • Community Outreach: Engage with community members and visitors, educating them about Snip & Tip’s mission and programs, and promoting responsible pet ownership.

Level of Difficulty:

  • Physical (3/5): Involves lifting, bending, and handling animals of various sizes and conditions.

  • Mental (3/5): Requires attention to detail, the ability to follow instructions, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Emotional (4/5): Can be emotionally challenging due to dealing with sick or injured animals and the potential for attachment to the animals in care.

Expected Environmental Conditions: Majority of the work occurs indoors at Cody's house or future Snip & Tip facilities, with some work required outdoors. Volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared for varying conditions.


How Often Volunteers Work On-site: All volunteer work is on-site at Cody's house, future facilities, or large volume clinics.


Orientation/Training:

  • General orientation and training on Snip & Tip’s animal care policies and procedures.

  • Hands-on training specific to the role, including animal handling, health monitoring, and record-keeping.

  • Introduction to key team members and veterinary partners.

Learning Opportunities:

  • Develop or strengthen skills in animal care and health monitoring.

  • Gain experience in working with a variety of animals and understanding their needs.

  • Enhance communication and community outreach skills.

Position Start Date: Ongoing.


Initial Minimum Commitment: Four to ten hours per week for three months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and interest.


Scheduling Guidelines: Flexible, with some work required during regular business hours and occasional evenings or weekends based on the needs of the animals and the facility.


Tools/Equipment Provided (including Personal Protective Equipment):

  • Training materials, resources, and support for animal care activities.

  • Supplies for animal care, including food, litter, medical kits, and cleaning materials.

Optional Tools/Equipment: Any specialty tools or personal equipment you prefer to work with.


Supervisor(s): Program Coordinator, Snip & Tip.


Number of Concurrent Volunteer Openings: 5-7 individuals per location.

Restrictions:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Must wear a Snip & Tip t-shirt (provided at no cost) when representing the program.

  • Must have reliable transportation for travel to Cody's house, future facilities, and veterinary clinics.

  • Must complete all assigned training before being assigned to this position.

Qualifications/Requirements for Volunteer Applicants:

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Comfortable handling animals of various temperaments.

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.

  • Experience in animal care is preferred but not required.
