This flexible, off-site position allows you to make a tangible difference in animal welfare while developing valuable skills in logistics, animal handling, and communication.

Work Location: Killeen, and other Central Texas cities where Snip & Tip operates.


Purpose of the Position: The Transport Volunteer supports Snip & Tip by safely transporting cats and kittens between trapping locations, veterinary clinics, foster homes, and other designated sites, ensuring their well-being during transit.


Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Transport: Safely transport cats and kittens to and from trapping locations, veterinary clinics, foster homes, and other designated sites using your own personal vehicle.

  • Health and Safety: Ensure the health and safety of animals during transport by providing appropriate enclosures, ventilation, and temperature control.

  • Coordination: Communicate and coordinate with Snip & Tip staff and other volunteers to schedule and confirm transport arrangements.

  • Loading and Unloading: Assist with the safe loading and unloading of animals from vehicles, ensuring they are securely placed in enclosures during transit.

  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of transport details, including pick-up and drop-off times, locations, and any observations about the animals' health or behavior.

  • Communication: Provide regular updates to the program coordinator about transport activities and any issues or concerns encountered during transport.

  • Vehicle Maintenance: Ensure that your vehicle is clean, well-maintained, and equipped with necessary supplies for animal transport, such as carriers, blankets, and cleaning materials.

  • Outreach: Represent Snip & Tip professionally while interacting with community members, veterinary staff, and other volunteers during transport activities.

Level of Difficulty:

  • Physical (3/5): Involves lifting and handling animals and their carriers.

  • Mental (3/5): Requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to follow schedules and instructions.

  • Emotional (3/5): Can be emotionally challenging due to the responsibility of caring for animals during transport and encountering various conditions of animals.

Expected Environmental Conditions: Majority of the work occurs in your personal vehicle and various locations, including outdoor and indoor environments. Volunteers should be prepared for varying weather conditions and ensure their vehicle is appropriately equipped.


How Often Volunteers Work On-site: All volunteer work is off-site, involving travel between various locations.


Orientation/Training:

  • General orientation and training on Snip & Tip’s transport procedures, animal handling, and safety protocols.

  • Hands-on training specific to the role, including proper loading, unloading, and securing of animals during transit.

  • Introduction to key team members and veterinary partners.

Learning Opportunities:

  • Develop or strengthen skills in animal handling and transport.

  • Gain experience in coordinating logistics and scheduling.

  • Enhance communication and organizational skills.

Position Start Date: Ongoing.


Initial Minimum Commitment: Four to ten hours per week for three months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and interest.


Scheduling Guidelines: Flexible, with transport needs varying based on trapping schedules, veterinary appointments, and other program activities. Volunteers should be available for scheduled transport times and occasional short-notice requests.


Tools/Equipment Provided (including Personal Protective Equipment):

  • Training materials, resources, and support for transport activities.

  • Supplies for animal transport, including carriers, blankets, and cleaning materials.

Optional Tools/Equipment: Any specialty tools or personal equipment you prefer to work with.


Number of Concurrent Volunteer Openings: 4-6 individuals per location.

Restrictions:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Must wear a Snip & Tip t-shirt (provided at no cost) when representing the program.

  • Must have reliable transportation for travel between trapping locations, veterinary clinics, foster homes, and other designated sites.

  • Must submit required paperwork and pass a background check before being assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements for Volunteer Applicants:

  • Meet the requirements outlined in the Essential Capabilities document with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Valid driver’s license, automobile registration, and insurance.

  • Reliable personal vehicle suitable for animal transport.

  • Clean driving record with no major moving violations.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Comfortable handling animals of various temperaments.

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.

  • Experience in animal care or transport is preferred but not required.

  • Access to a computer and internet for record-keeping and communication.
